Peter Thelin is a master optician who has been working in the field of hand-polishing optics for over 30 years. He began his career at Zygo Corporation in Connecticut and later joined Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) in December 1988, where he has been working as a master optician ever since.
Thelin has collaborated on various projects, including the NOVA laser (predecessor to the National Ignition Facility), the Mercury Laser project, and working with the Scintillator Group on exotic materials for radiation detection. His expertise in hand-polishing optics has been crucial to the success of these projects, especially when dealing with delicate and sensitive materials.
In an industry that has largely transitioned to automation, Thelin’s hand-polishing skills and craftsmanship are considered unique and valuable. He has developed processes and techniques that allow him to work with fragile crystals and materials that are not commonly encountered elsewhere.
Thelin is also involved in mentoring an accomplished optician named Eric Strang, who will eventually take over his role. Strang appreciates the hands-on experience and the opportunity to contribute to breakthroughs happening at LLNL.
Outside of his work, Thelin engages in various artistic pursuits such as painting and enjoys activities like working on cars, sailing, and playing ping-pong.
